The COVID-19 pandemic affected businesses in ways we didn't see before, but opened new opportunities, and App Modernization is one of them. Read all about it here!

The global lockdown has encouraged and accelerated experimentation with any number of new organizational practices. The impact of the current has been quite strong, in terms of collective and individual commitment, adaptation, health, the very rapid adoption of new working methods and re-defining management. Companies have been challenged to adjust very quickly to deal with the emergency.

The Pandemic and App Modernization: A new reality - in IT, too

Usually, before modernizing, a company would need to be prepared. From evaluating applications and their dependencies to migrating legacy applications to the cloud as they are, or with minimal changes to the application's code or configuration, from breaking monoliths and re-defining needs, all these usually take space, time, and money. 2020 has all but eliminated the time factor, greatly impacted the money aspect – with many small and medium-sized businesses being left to struggle – and rendered space almost entirely irrelevant as a concern. The challenges came in many shapes and sizes – remote access, fast access, cutting costs, re-evaluating the personnel needs and expectations, adjusting building requirements to the new post-COVID-19 reality.

One of the main issues was local dedicated servers that needed to be supervised and maintained in their respective location. With the entire staff under lockdown, more and more companies have been forced to realize that the future lies with managed services in the public cloud. The data in the cloud no longer needs constant monitoring and care, and what maintenance is needed can be delivered from anywhere in the world. This also leads to cost savings.

.NET App Modernization: Opportunities

With the recent release of .NET 5.0, even more applications can be quickly modernized to take advantage of increased developer productivity and significant cost savings enabled by a modern codebase hosted in the public cloud, be it Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, or Google Cloud Platform.

The ubiquity of .NET also makes it an attractive development platform to replace legacy software. With many businesses being on the verge of extinction, prohibitive costs for hiring highly specialized staff that is often also irreplaceable is mainly a strategic weakness.

Here, at Aligned, we want to help you overcome the challenges posed by the current public health and economic crisis in the most productive and efficient way for your business. 2020 has shown us all that the best kind of risk management will still not be able to predict and cover all the risks.
